Cop vs Dirty Cop

19 February 2016 | by coreyjdenford (England) – See all my reviews

This is my review of Triple 9 (spoiler free)

Directed by John Hillcoat

Distributor: Entertainment One.

Cast: Casey Affleck, Anthony Mackie, Chiwetel Ejiofor Woody Harrelson, Aaron Paul, Kate Winslet, Norman Reedus.

Plot: A gang of criminals and corrupt cops plan to kill an officer to pull off the biggest heist yet across the town.

Casey Affleck stars as Chris Allen the nephew of Sergeant Detective Jeffrey Allen (Harrelson) the cop behind the investigation of catching the criminals, and figuring out who the corrupt cops are. Terrell Tompkins (Ejiofor) is the leader of the corrupt cops lead by Irina Vlaslov (Winslet), Winslet's stand out performance really puts the film together kind of like in last year's Steve Jobs.

Although this dark and gritty cop thriller was almost never made by Australian director John Hillcoat (The Proposition, The Road), mainly because of production problems and loads of actors dropping out. For example Shia LeBeouf became Charlie Hunnam became Casey Affleck for Chris Allen, then Michael B. Jordan became Mackie as Marcus Atwood, Cate Blanchett replaced for Kate Winslet and Christoph Waltz for Woody Harrelson.

It's courageous yet patchy in parts but still gets the story through, but not as good as Dennis Villeneuve's criminally underrated Sicario (2015) it still is a gripping and action packed adventure.

These are the reasons why I think this is a must see thriller:

Captivating set-pieces: There are several set-pieces used in the film one of them even takes the film to the next level.

Great Cast: The cast really makes this film people like Chiwetel Ejiofor known 12 Years A Slave, and last years The Martian, Anthony Mackie plays The Falcon in so many Marvel films, Finally the real performance comes from Kate Winslet and her very convincing Russian accent. They make this film a must in my opinion.

Finally with the amazing action and intense set-pieces this film is like Point Break vs Sicario and is truly a once in a life time thriller that will have you gripping your seat from start finish. Although it is not for the weak hearted.

Verdict: If you like Se7en and Animal Kingdom and very dark cop thrillers this is the film for you. 8/10 a must watch.

Kooky, Laughable, Livid, Ludicrous and Lurid

12 October 2014 | by Siebert_Tenseven (United States) – See all my reviews

I completely enjoyed this film and am looking forward to watching it again. I enjoy Gregg Araki's work because it's always a bit strange, and this film is no exception. Everyone acts a little weird and does a great job of it. A few of the script lines had me laughing out loud. The pacing is stop and go so be prepared for that. In addition, there are some things that might not make sense, so if you like things to be all set up in the correct compartments, forget it. Essentially, a lot of Araki's films are about getting out of the comfort zone. Obviously this creates a lot of anxiety among motion picture producers and even more so amongst the viewers of his films. The fact that this film exists at all is a testament to the perseverance of a director with a unique skew on the world and the gift of being able to capture it.

not quite what I expected!

12 May 2002 | by whirligig (Trinidad, West Indies) – See all my reviews

First off, I was quite surprised to see the cinema so full for this movie, even on opening weekend. I guess not that many movies for women in their 30's plus exist these days!

I expected this movie, as I'm sure many people did, to be a Fatal Attraction but with the genders switched around.

I was pleasantly surprised and shocked by it NOT being what I expected, and I definitely enjoyed it alot more than Fatal Attraction.

The summary of this movie is that Diane Lane's character starts cheating on her husband (Richard Gere) with a beautiful French man(Olivier Martinez). Everything else should be left for surprise.

The pacing of this movie is perfect. We got a sense of Connie and Edward's home life before she met the dashing Paul. They have a darling son, Charlie, who adds alot of humour to the movie, but in a non precocious way. After the affair starts we see Connie's feelings range from excitement to complete disgust with herself. And of course Edward inevitably finds out. His reaction is interesting, to say the least, and perhaps very honest.

Alright, but not as great at the reviewers are saying

17 August 2015 | by JabezGill (United States) – See all my reviews

All of the other reviewers seem to be typing tons of paragraphs...so I will try to keep mine brief and to the point.

I like Joel & Jason a lot as actors. I thought the movie was okay, but towards the end of the movie I found myself just ready for it to resolve and be over...so is the movie good?

Was I entertained? All in all, Yes. Was the Acting, Writing & Filming well done? Yes, very. Was it Suspenseful? I jumped Once. Never felt any real suspense though. Was it a thriller? Not really, more like a short story drama drug out for 2 hours Would I recommend it? No, but I also wouldn't say DON'T see it. Would I see it again? No. Will I remember it in a few months? No. Was the ending good? No, it kind've ruined the movie a bit for me.

Pro: Great Acting, Interesting Concept on the Surface. Con: No characters are sympathetic enough to care about, So you never get investe

Pretty good murder mystery with a lot of interesting twist and turns

22 November 2015 | by subxerogravity (United States) – See all my reviews

Chiwetel Ejiofor was really good. His performance here mimics his performance in Z for Zachary. Both movies have dark themes, with Secret in Their Eyes being about trying to convict a murderer for the rape and murder of a young woman after the case is 15 years cold, when he slips through their fingers the first time.

Ejiofor plays Ray, an FBI agent determined to find the killer, and he plays it dark with touches of light humor, that allows us to like the character more, even as he juggles his obsession with the case with his attraction to the new DA, Claire played by Nicole Kidman. The relationship between Ray and Claire was done well and made it interesting to watch.

Ejiofor also showcases this balance as he investigates the case with Bumpy Willis, played by Dean Norris of Breaking Bad fame.

Julia Roberts gave a great performance in the film as the mother whose daughter was murdered and also happens to be a fellow FBI investigator. She seem unafraid to glam it down in order to fully get into the character of a grieving mother.

I understand that Secret in Their Eyes was adapted from a foreign film, but without seeing that film, I thought the overall experience of watching this film was great. It's a good look about what obsession and the need fro redemption can do to you and it was filled with a lot of twist and turns that keep you guessing, like a good murder mystery should.
